On the judgement of History

Joan W. Scott reflects on the “the judgement of history” as the victor’s moral judgement of events. She argues that it is human agency that makes history and historians those who decide what matters from history in each particular context. Her case studies are: The Nuremberg trial, Germany, 1946; The Truth and Reconciliation Commission, South Africa, 1996 and the reparation movements for slavery in the United States.

Joan W. Scott and Rafael Sagredo engage in a dialogue centered around Public History and the role of the historian. Inspired by the 50^th anniversary of Chile’s coup d’état, they discuss how to approach the past in societies with recent traumatic pasts. The historians Daniela Serra and Macarena Ponce de León guide a conversation inspired by the commemoration of the 50^th anniversary of Chile’s coup d’état.

This conversation with Nancy Nichols (Chile), Catalina Muñoz (Colombia) and Noor Nieftagodien (South Africa) focuses on the role of the public historian; the relationship among Public History, activism and social justice; the role of communities in the interpretation of the past; participative practices and shared authority; as well as controversial commemorations.

Training and practice of Public History at the Instituto de Historia UC

This section shows four Public History projects developed by the students of the BA in History of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile: Pilar Quintana, Paula Smith, Bernardita Bascuñán, Josefina Rossi, Samuel Ávila, Dayenus Pino, Francisco Valderrama, Vicente Gómez, Carmina Gutiérrez and Daniela Pizarro, during the year 2022 and presented in March 2023.

World champion in memory and past politics. The Chilean and German cases in comparison.

This article compares the politics of memory and the past in Chile after the Pinochet dictatorship with Federal Germany after the II Word War. After a brief review of the most important measures taken by the governments in both countries to deal with the traumatic past, we underline some elements which were determining for the outcome and perception of the politics of memory and the past in both countries. Factors such as the years passing after the dictatorship, the international context, the conditions of the transitions processes and the public discourse seems be very important to have in mind before pronouncing a judgement about the politics of memory and the past.
