The patriarch’s response came after the <em>Symbol of Union</em> and before the Council of Chalcedon. This paper looks at its possible influence on the decision that followed<em>. </em>Toward that end, it compares the content of the <em>Tomus</em> with documents that preceded the Council and those from the Council itself in the year AD 451. It examines the technical vocabulary used in the <em>Tomus</em>, comparing it with the ways those terms were understood both before and after. The article then compares the Christological statements in the <em>Tomus </em>with those in those same documents.
