VISIONS OF THE HEROIC: MARTÍ, DARÍO, MISTRAL

Abstract

A detailed comparative analysis of three poems that share the same motif of an encounter in dream or nocturnal vision with some supernatural manifestation of the heroic: “Sueño con claustros de mármol...” of José Martí, “Hondas” of Ruben Darío and “La cabalgata” of Gabriela Mistral, pointing out their multiple affinities, emphasizing the originality and force of the latter’s feminine and revisionary variant and concluding with observations about the significance of the heroic for the modern lyric poet.
