Carlos Cerda, splendor and agony of an exile

Abstract

This article presents an analysis of the story “Esplendor y agonía de los caballos” (1986), by the Chilean writer Carlos Cerda, in the light of some categories that characterize intercultural literatures. As the story originates in the encounter of two cultural memories (Germany/Chile) present in the mind of the writer at the time of creating the work, it is interesting to analyse the text from the perspectives of the vital spaces (Bieniec, 2009) which characterize literary interculturality: the space of language (communicative/latent), the space of memory (origin/host country), the place of the narrator (recall/memory), the encounter with the other (otherness) and the erotic experience (monocultural/intercultural).
