Abstract

The annotated edition of the Historia general del reino de Chile, Flandes Indiano (1674), by the Jesuit Diego de Rosales, presents enormous challenges for researchers. In addition to its extensiveness, 840 folios distributed in ten books, the manuscript has a haphazard editorial story and incorporates a multiplicity of topics: in addition to being a detailed account of Chile’s history throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, it includes a repertoire of Magellan travels, an ethnographic treatise, and a complete natural treatise on the territory. Additionally, the text incorporates more than 6,600 apostilles to unravel. The author’s unique knowledge and his vast personal experience about what he writes, challenges the editor to correctly decipher and interpret the text.
