In his concern for the imminent loss oflocal traditions, Jorge Teillier develops an antimodernization discourse along with his signature "laric poetry. " In so doing, he recovers and retells regional history before modernization completely effaces it and its witnesses pass away. In his poetic and critical work on the rebuilding ofregional and cultural identity, Teillier on the one hand unmasks a pervading racist outlook throughout Chilean history, and on the other rebuilds a poetical world on the basis of transculturation, and cultural and religious syncretism
