Chilean's in Madrid. Joaquín Edwards Bello

Abstract

This is the second part of Chileans in Madrid. It focuses entirely on the figure of Joaquin Edwards Bello, one of the Chilean writers who adapted best to life in the Spanish capital during the early decades of the 20th century. During his first years in Madrid he became involved in the early avant-garde Ultraist movement, and actively participated in the literary tertulias of several of that city's cafés. He established solid relations with Spanish writers of that time, with Chilean residents in Madrid and with the most important publishers, some of whom undertook the publication of his works. On his return to Chile he published the most Spanish of his books, El chileno en Madrid, and urban novel of great interest that was well received in Spain. His knowledge of and dedication to Spain found its highest expression in the chronicles on the Spanish Civil War he wrote in his native country.
