Abstract
Most people either do not know Adrienne von Speyr or think of her as a strange mystical figure who worked with the theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar. However, few know her as a physician in Basel between the 1930s and 1950s. She practiced her profession with a passion inspired by her faith, constantly integrating science and spirituality. By looking at some of her works, the aim of this article is to present this little-studied facet of Adrienne von Speyr’s life and the way in which her medical activity shaped her reading of the Scriptures, explored here through John 11. The article also and primarily highlights the originality of von Speyr’s contribution to reflections on the practice of medicine and living with illness.
